Introduction to alchemy

What is alchemy?

Alchemy and the Stone of the Meadows

Alchemy Triple Feature Elixir of Life- Sulfur of the Sun- Philosopher’s Stone by Steven School

Alchemy has been known since ancient times and consists of three basic realms or kingdoms which are known as plant, animal and mineral. Each of these three primary areas of hermetic alchemy is said to have a basic stone associated with it. These stones are sometimes referred to as philosopher’s stones. Lapis animalis, Lapis vegetabilis and Lapis mineralis are but a few of the alchemical names that have been associated with these alchemy stones. Below the basic vegetable stone lie various herbal tinctures alchemically prepared with materials from the plant realm. The word VITRIOL is common in alchemy and seems to be associated with The term visit the interior of the earth and by rectification find the occult lapis. There however is more than one type of “earth” encountered in alchemy. As concerns the realm of the metals alchemists usually chose a metallic ore or metal specimen of some type and then worked upon it with a liquid dissolving agent of which there were three main types. In ancient alchemy as depicted in the actum leyden letter and some writings attributed to the alchemist Friederich Gualdus, a seawater menstuum is alluded to involving water from the sea processed in different ways for purification and strength, sometimes modified by adding sea salt to vinegar and this was supposed to resolve metals back into their first matter and theoretically make them start growing again as living crystals. Vinegar later became the focus of metal acetate paths in alchemy which eventually gave way to acids. Acid and metal to burn off impurities, dissolve and coagulate into something called vitriol. These coincide with the seven planetary metals in alchemy which after being alchemically processed might be reduced into “stones” called vitriol. Alchemy gemstones hypothically speaking could have been based on such things as carbon, silica, and even vitriol made from metals or minerals. Alchemists were rumored to have an alkahest or universal dissolving agent to assist this process with the old axiom “solve et coagula” or dissolve and coagulate.

Alchemy and the Alkahest

Alchemist’s supposedly possessed a secret water, a universal dissolving liquid called alkahest that was said to be beneficial in creating alchemy gemstones which were theoretically colored by VITRIOL. Notice the similarity of the words alkahest, and alkaline. My research also indicates that some gemstones are made from corundum. Silica is said to dissolve in alkaline water. When silica is heated with carbon above 1700 degrees celsius it form carborundum. What is the difference between corundum and carborundum?

the difference between corundum and carborundum

is that corundum is a extremely hard mineral, a form of aluminum oxide that occurs in the form of the gemstones sapphire and ruby. carborundum is crystals of silicon carbide used as an abrasive.

Blue Vitriol Alchemy Experiment

What is vitriol in alchemy?
V.I.T.R.I.O.L. stands for Visita Interiora Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem, or Visit the interior of the earth and by rectification find the occult lapis.
Blue vitriol is a water soluble crystalline salt of copper. Toxic.  It is used in insecticides and germicides, in electrolytes for batteries, and in electroplating baths. Oil of vitriol is said to be blue in liquid form but dries to a white salt. I am not highlighting scientific blue vitriol, this is the alchemical version of blue vitriol.

The Philosopher’s Stone Riddle by Steven School, Alchemist.

the philosopher's stone riddle

The Philosopher’s Stone Riddle.

With twin serpents i entwine, The four elements i combine,

First two, to make three, And then a fourth with glee,

Dissolve and coagulate, Thrice i propagate,

The elixir of life within a glass, This too shall come to pass,

The alchemist must find the secret key, To unlock nature’s mystery,

With nerves of steel, I spin the alchemical wheel,

The colors of the great work are shown, To those whose eyes have known,

To light the way, each night and day,

For sun and moon, We must swoon,

In the glass round and round, With doves of Diana it is ground,

Diana’s tree must I climb, Until it stands the test of time,

Come now uplift the glass, Nature’s last gate to pass,

Raining hellfire and brimstone, A victory over chaos is sewn.

What are the best alchemy books for beginners?

Here are my top picks on which alchemy books I would recommend first as a good starting point on an alchemical library.

Alchemy of Herbs: Transform Everyday Ingredients into Foods and Remedies That Heal Kindle Edition by Rosalee de la Forêt (Author)   I believe that food and medicine are for the most part one and the same. I also belief that good health begins in the garden. Alchemy was not just the ancient predecessor of science, but of medicine as well. Many alchemical scholars of the past have advised that of the three realms or kingdoms which comprise the vast labyrinth that is alchemy, that the best place to start is in the plant realm.

alchemy of herbs

Did you know there’s a powerful herbal medicine chest in your kitchen?
Imagine being prepared for that next cold, scrape, headache, digestive issue, stressful day, or sleepless night with simple ingredients from your cupboard. Instead of pills, reach for:
Cinnamon Tea to soothe your throat . . . Garlic Hummus to support your immune system . . . Ginger Lemon Tea for cold and flu symptoms . . . Cayenne Salve to relieve sore muscles . . . Cardamom Chocolate Mousse Cake for heart health . . . A glass of Spiced Cold Brew Coffee as a powerful antioxidant . . .
Alchemy of Herbs will show you how to transform common ingredients into foods and remedies that heal. What were once everyday flavorings will become your personal kitchen apothecary. While using herbs can often seem complicated or costly, this book offers a way to learn that’s as simple and inexpensive as cooking dinner.
With the guidance of herbalist Rosalee de la Forêt, you’ll understand how to match the properties of each plant to your own unique needs, for a truly personalized approach to health for you and your family.
In addition to offering dozens of inspiring recipes, Rosalee examines the history and modern-day use of 29 popular herbs, supporting their healing properties with both scientific studies and in-depth research into herbal energetics.
Grow your knowledge of healing herbs and spices, and start using nature’s pharmacy to feed, heal, and nurture your whole family!

The animal realm was often considered to be the next section of study for alchemists and this consisted of a great many things such as creating primitive nutritional supplements by grinding egg shells to powder or even making bone soup said to gather stem cells from bone marrow of chickens, fish, or even cows. One modern book I have read which seems to fit here is The Book of Aquarius: Alchemy and the Philosophers’ Stone: Alchemy Secrets Revealed Paperback – March 19, 2012 by Author Unknown (Author), Wanda Priday (Editor)

the book of aquarius alchemy secrets revealed alchemy and the philosopher's stone

The Book of Aquarius reveals one particular secret which has been kept hidden for the last 12,000 years. It is the nuts and bolts for the process of Alchemy. Alchemy is used to create the Philosophers’ Stone and the Elixir of Life, also known as the Fountain of Youth, Ambrosia, Soma, Amrita, and Nectar of Immortality. “Throughout history this secret has been used by a very few to extend their lives hundreds of years in perfect health, with access to unlimited wealth, among many other miraculous properties. Some kept the secret because they understood that the time was not right for the secret to be free for all people, but most kept the secret out of their own jealousy, ignorance, egotism and corruption. The Stone’s history and the history of the human race up until this day is a strange story full of secret societies, hooded cloaks, and mystical symbols. Such theatrics are childish and shallow. It’s pointless to look for the light in the shadows. The Philosophers’ Stone operates and is made by entirely natural and scientific means. Truth is always simple, beautiful and easy to understand.” Keywords The Book Of Aquarius, Alchemy And The Philosopher’s Stone, Alchemy Secrets Revealed.

Now, moving along as we climb the alchemical ladder towards The Magnum Opus of alchemy or The Grand Arcanum as it were one of my all time favorite best books on alchemy is…. Alchemy Unveiled by Johannes Helmond I never lose interest in this book, it seems like every time I pick it up I find another alchemical gem which deepens my level of understanding of the ancient hermetic science of alchemy.

alchemy unveiled

Alchemy is the last and highest knowledge which can be committed to paper in the form of letters. Beyond that, another language is required, one which cannot be committed to paper. Most people confuse iatrochemistry with Alchemy. When an Alchemist speaks of Mercury, Sulphur and Salt, he speaks of his spiritual, astral and physical bodies, not of the elements. Alchemy Unveiled describes the tribulations that a human being has to pass through in order to purify these three bodies. However, to achieve the level of an Alchemist requires daily study and strict daily mental, astral and physical exercises for many lifetimes. Many individuals have already achieved this goal. The purpose is not to convert a lower metal into gold, but to change an impure body into a pure body, namely the spirit, soul and physical bodies. An Alchemist is one who has passed the levels of a magician, spheric magician and Kabbalist. All these levels can be achieved without the help of a teacher! These Western writings are by those who have reached levels higher than an Alchemist. They have given us these writings, philosophically and practically. These sciences cannot be learned intellectually, but have to be approached with a clean heart. One’s character has to be completely free of all negative characteristics. And for the one who embarks on this journey, the first thing to be learned is what a positive characteristic is and what a negative characteristic is. And the reader will be surprised what negative characteristics are, because many of these characteristics are considered by most as positive. Alchemy Unveiled will lead the reader on a journey of a complete purification of the body, soul and spirit, and for the first time the mystery of the Philosopher’s Stone is openly explained. Much has been written about this subject, most of which is and remains incomprehensible for most. Many of the alchemical writings available were and are based on error and point the way to the wrong path. This is mainly due to the fact that many individuals do this for personal, material gain. Alchemy Unveiled begins with an explicit explanation of the symbolic language of Alchemy, which is a must for any further clear understanding of the entire text of this book. It explains the errors of many who were not in possession of the true knowledge regarding this art. It takes the reader on a journey through the ancient mysteries of Initiation, the Osiris mysteries, the Eleusian Mysteries, the Mysteries of Israel, the Christ-Mysterium and the Mystery of Alchemy. An excellent addition to the Franz Bardon books on Hermetics.

And now we move on to another good book further illuminating The Great Work of Alchemy. A Compendium of Works on the Philosopher’s Stone by Anonymous Anonymous (2015-06-02) Paperback – 1798 by Anonymous Anonymous (Author)
