The moon rabbit or moon hare is a figure in Asian folklore who lives on the moon. The rabbit is usually depicted as pounding with a mortar and pestle while making the elixir of life drink.

The elixir of life, also known as elixir of immortality and sometimes equated with the philosopher’s stone of alchemy , is a potion that supposedly grants the drinker eternal life and or eternal youth. The great elixir was also said to cure all sickness.
